MINIMALLY INVASIVE TREATMENT

Drs. Benjamin Cohen and Jai Grewal to Host CME Program at South Nassau Hospital
ROCKVILLE, CENTRE, N.Y., November 13, 2010 –

The latest trends in diagnosis and treatment of spinal tumors, focusing on new minimally invasive surgical approaches, will be the topic of a half-day symposium for health care professionals, Saturday, November 13, 2010 at South Nassau Communities Hospital. Neurosurgeon Benjamin R. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.S. and neuro-oncologist Jai Grewal, M.D., are chairing the program; Dr. Cohen will serve as moderator. Both physicians are affiliated with Neurological Surgery, P.C., a large private practice of leading neurosurgeons and physicians in related specialties.

“2010 Update: Advances in the Evaluation and Treatment of Spinal Tumors” will be geared toward physicians in a range of specialties including neurosurgery, general surgery, internal medicine, family practice, medical oncology, radiation oncology, neurology, urology, and orthopedic surgery. Residents, physician assistants and nurses interested in this topic are also welcome to attend. Participating physicians will be eligible to receive up to 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits.

“When appropriate, minimally invasive treatment of spinal tumors can decrease post-operative pain and recovery time, and allow patients to get back to their normal activities more quickly,” says Dr. Cohen. “This program will describe those techniques and when they should be used, as well as their benefits and risks. It will also discuss non-surgical approaches.”

The symposium, which will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature a faculty of leading spine and cancer care specialists.

Following a welcome by Dr. Cohen, he will present the topic “Minimally Invasive Treatment Modalities for Spinal Tumors.” An additional seven presentations will be made by experts in their respective fields, including:

  • “Evaluation and Treatment of Metastatic Tumors” - Marc Agulnick, M.D., F.A.A.O.S., Orthopedic Surgeon, NY Spine & Scoliosis Center;
  • “Embolization of Spinal Tumors”- John Pile-Spellman, M.D., F.A.C.R., Endovascular Neuroradiologist, Neurologicial Surgery, P.C.;
  • “Evaluation and Treatment of Intradural Spinal Tumors” - Jonathan L. Brisman, M.D., Neurosurgeon, Neurological Surgery, P.C.;
  • “Adjuvant Therapy for Spinal Tumors” - Jai Grewal, M.D., Neuro-Oncologist, Neurological Surgery, P.C.;
  • “Radiation Therapy for Spine Tumors” - Edward Mullen, M.D., Radiation Oncologist, South Nassau Communities Hospital;

  • “Non-Surgical and Peri-Surgical Management of Spinal Tumors” - Robert Iadevaio, M.D., Pain Management Anesthesiologist, South Nassau Communities Hospital.

The program will conclude with a question and answer session led by Dr. Cohen.

The early registration deadline is October 31. South Nassau Communities Hospital (SNCH) physicians and employees who pre-register may attend the symposium free of charge. Non-SNCH physicians must pay a $35 registration fee. All on-site registrants will be charged $50.
