Neuro-Ophthalmology Specific Diseases

Dr Uretsky - What to expect at your neuro-ophthalmology visit

Neuro-Ophthalmic visits are in depth evaluations with extensive examinations of the visual and neurological systems.  Patients should expect to have their eyes dilated and make arrangements to have an accompanying friend or family member for transportation home (dilation can cause blurred vision and discomfort from light and you should bring sunglasses).  The patient will visit with the doctor and technician several times during the visit, before and after dilation.  Additionally, several tests may be obtained during the visit, such as visual fields, fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, all of which are painless and non-invasiveIt should be expected that a visit may last 3 to 4 hours in duration depending upon the extent of evaluation and testing.

Patients should bring several items to their visit:

  • Labs already obtained during recent evaluation
  • MRI and CT scans, both the reports from the radiologist and the actual images, preferably burnt to a CD (this can be obtained at the imaging facility at the same time you have the scan done)
  • A complete list of current and recent medications
  • A complete medical and surgical history
