Transsphenoidal surgery is an endoscopic procedure where our fellowship-trained neurosurgeons remove a pituitary tumor via the nasal cavity.
The process includes cutting into the sinus cavity, inserting a camera and then removing part of the sphenoid sinus in order to access the pituitary cavity. From there, your neurosurgeon will remove the tumor in small pieces leaving the pituitary gland intact.
General anesthesia is used and our patients are typically hospitalized for 2-5 days after the procedure for close monitoring. After release, you will be able to return to work in 3 to 6 weeks. A follow-up MRI scan will help assess the success of your surgery.
Our board-certified neurosurgeons use transsphenoidal surgery to treat pituitary adenomas. These tumors are most likely benign and fall into the two categories of either secretory or non-secretory. This is in reference to the secretion of hormones by the pituitary gland.
